Manic Monday: Cooking, etc.

mushroom, green pepper, and sprout stir fry

It’s another Manic Monday at The Vagabond Studio! Today, I’m going to share with you a little story. Growing up, my mom was a cook. She cooked in restaurants for a great part of my life, and worked as a nutrition specialist at several private facilities. My childhood is littered with memories of watching mom bake bread from scratch and conjure incredible meals with sauces and creams that I can barely pronounce. That was her kitchen, though, and any time someone stepped foot in it she jokingly poked us in the stomach with her spatula and kicked us out. I don’t blame her, really – we had a tiny little kitchen compared to the giant industrial kitchens in which she worked. In that little space, she alone created Italian dishes, epic southern food, and so many soups and side dishes that she really should make her own cook book. As a result, I spent a good part of my childhood wanting to attend culinary school in order to learn to cook as well as my mother. My dreams of flying and then being an artist seemed to overtake the culinary school idea and, as an adult, I seem to do good to make simple meals. No more! I am going to start trying out recipes here and there, and adding them to the blog. I refuse to make it a feature, however, as I can’t guarantee success in this endeavor. So, I’m adding ‘cooking’ to my epic to-do list. Don’t fret, our weekly Vegetarian Recipes feature by Sage is sticking around, I promise! Sage is a pro at this vegan thing and comes up with some stellar recipes, which I will continue to share. I just realized that I have to ask Sage to partner with me on the feature because, simply, I don’t know how to cook…and it’s about time I do something to fix that!

Where did you learn to cook? Did you ever consider culinary school?

Comments

  1. I considered it! But I think for the opposite reason that you did hehe. My mom was not a cook! We had the same 7-10 meals ALL the time and we ate a lot of pasta lol. When I finally started to learn for myself in college I was amazed at what I could create :) Excited to follow your new endeavor!

  2. I learned to cook by watching my grandmothers in the kitchen. They were amazing <3

  3. I hate to say neither my wife nor I am a very good cook. I learned to cook from my mother. I would send my wife to culinary school but I don’t think she would pass. Her niche is blogging and that is her passion. It is just a hobby for me. I have started a diet and my biggest struggle is eating vegetables. We are going to have to stop back by to visit your Vegetarian Recipes.
