Because I'm such a multi-faceted adventurer, I find myself bombarded with questions on a fairly steady basis. A lot of those questions are repeats, so I've created this handy FAQ page to centralize my answers and, hopefully, make them easier for you to find!
What if I want to meet or learn from you IRL? Where are you located?
I currently reside in metro-Atlanta, where I will likely stay. I do travel to Savannah quite often, and have made it out to both California as well as Maine in the last eight months. I love working with local businesses, Etsians, and organization leaders in person, so feel free to contact me if you're local and want in-person help, or if you're not local and want me to come out and teach a workshop - I do that, too!
Do you just work for organizations? Could you help me, even as a tiny little start-up Etsian?
I actually work for more tiny little start-up Etsians and Bloggers than I do organizations! My goal, really, isn't to 'work for' anyone - it's to teach Etsians, Bloggers, and Organizational Leaders how to build, run, and market their own business so that they no longer need me. Remember that saying about teaching a man to fish? Yes, that. So yes, I can absolutely help you with your 'tiny little start-up'!
I will eventually have packages, eBooks, eCourses, and an entire online community linked here. Until then, if you want to work with me one-on-one (and I would LOVE to work with you!), just message me via the contact form or send an email to email@example.com
For what kinds of organizations do you work? What do you do for them?
I have contracts with multiple organizations and small businesses, and manage their social media and marketing on a long-term basis. With some, I have short-term contracts for specific campaigns. For these particular folks, especially the peace organizations, their time is just better spent elsewhere. They do the work, I spread the news and bring on new activists. They create the product, and I expand their brand to new clients or customers. They need funds, I help them fund-raise via social media. I do this work because I love small businesses over corporations, and peace activism, and I find that I can be more useful behind a Twitter handle than I can in the real-life organizational field.
How many kids do you have, again?
Two! Mini-Me is my nine-year-old, video-game obsessed, overly-excitable daughter. Micro-Me is my three-year-old son who thinks he rules the world. Together, these two are an unstoppable force of chaos and laughter.
Why 'The Vagabond Studio'?
When I first started this blog, it was just going to be somewhere I posted and shared my art and wedding projects (I'm a watercolor artist, and used to sell handmade bouquets made from book pages). A friend of mine and I came up with the name 'The Vagabond Studio' because it was catchy and fit my personality. The blog has, quite obviously, morphed a lot over the past couple of years, but it really just morphed into something that fit the title even more, as I work to open the online 'studio' community where dreamers and achievers can work together to make things happen!
Who do you look to for inspiration?
That list is intensive and exhaustive - I could have multiple blog posts on the subject. But, for now, I'm going to go with Paul K. Chappell, Denise Duffield-Thomas (that woman is a hoot!), Jen Saunders of Wild Sister Magazine, and Andrea of Oh Happy Life!
I'm a lucky, lucky woman because three out of four of those amazing people have become good friends of mine over the last year. You know you're in a great place when your idols and mentors become your friends!
Where did you learn all of this stuff?
Trial and error, baby - trial.and.error. It's not the easiest way to learn, but I wouldn't have done it any other way! While others are in school for marketing and business, I'm in school having a blast learning about philosophy and peace studies, and learning marketing in the real world. You know what that means? It means I made real-world connections, internships, and have a whole resume of experience, and I haven't even graduated yet. How many college seniors do you know who aren't going to school for marketing, haven't graduated yet, who have companies and organizations reaching out to them asking them to join their team? Well, now you know at least one.
I really, really don't suggest this route, though. Learning on my own was time-consuming and sometimes overwhelming. That's why I'm here to help you!
So, you still have an Etsy shop?
Yes! And, I plan on keeping one. I thoroughly believe that I can't teach others how to do something unless I have done and/or am doing it myself. I stamp memories, fears, ambitions and dreams upon the surface of bracelets and necklaces. It's kind of an awesome job. You can find me at The Vagabond Studio Etsy or at 'Shop My Etsy' in the menu.
What's up with the hair?
See...what had happened was....
Really though, I'm a natural redhead with a penchant for experimenting with my hair. I went natural for a couple of years, but was asked to 'teal-it-up' again for a speaking engagement where a promo shot they used had my old, teal bangs. I happily obliged - I'd been looking for a reason to dye it again anyway. A few weeks ago, it was natural red with blonde and teal tips. A couple days ago, I used a red-tinted shampoo that turned the tips red, peach, blue, and purple. I'm kind of like a mood ring here lately. So, I dunno what's up with the hair...you never know what color I'll have next!
If you didn't go to school for marketing, for what DID you go to school?
Social and Political Philosophy, with a minor in Peace Studies. I was originally an art education student, but fell in love with philosophy and peace in an elective Philosophies of Peace course. I spent the majority of my academic career drowning in Nietzsche, Confucius, Buddhism and Daoism, Marx, Emma Goldman, Simone de Beauvoir, and (my favorite) Merleau-Ponty in relation to Eco-Phenomenology.
